DIY Cavity Tray Installation (Type E Cavitrays)
This video shows how I replaced some cracked lead flashing above concrete lintels with cavity trays. When I was looking for information on how to fit these it was hard to come by so hopefully someone out there will find this useful.
Cavity trays collect any water within the cavity of a cavity wall and direct this water out and away from internal walls. Our property had some damp on the internal wall below the lintels and when I removed bricks I found the cavity to be full of debris bridging the cavity and there were lots of cracks in the lead flashing above the lintels.
I replaced the lead with cavity trays and afterwards covered the whole lot with a roof made from cedar shingles. [Hence the use of Flashband rather than lead under the cavity trays - they will be covered by the roof and therefore not exposed to damaging ultraviolet light. I also chose to install extra ventilation bricks to aid drying and again, these will be covered by the cedar shingle roof]
The process I followed is basically:
1. Remove bricks. See my other video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4TWUMD7HZZ8
***Don't remove more than a few bricks in a row or the wall might collapse! Once you have replaced the bricks and the mortar has set you can then move further along the wall.
2. Clear out cavity and remove old compromised lead.
3. Dry fit cavity trays to check that they fit.
4. Fit cavity trays by bedding them on mortar then mortaring in the bricks and weep vent.
