The Giver, Chapters 21-23 Audiobook
These are the final chapters of Lois Lowry's The Giver.
In these chapters:
--Jonas learns that Gabe cried the entire night Jonas spent with the Giver, and had been voted for release before the Ceremony. Even Father voted to release him
--That pushes Jonas to escape in the middle of the night. He steals Father's bike, takes Gabriel, steals food, and leaves.
--He rides all night, then sleeps all day in the woods. He makes both of them cold so the planes won't find them.
--Finally, he starts to lose his ability to receive and is basically injured, starving, and freezing most of the time. He keeps going because he needs Gabe to keep living, and he knows it's the only way Gabe WOULD get a life
--At last, he reaches the top of the hill, and recognises it from his memory of the sled. He finds that sled, gets on it, and slides towards a place with Christmas trees and music, and realises that they are waiting for him AND Gabe. He also senses that there is music back in his community.
--The ending is ambiguous about whether Jonas and Gabe survive or whether they are going to some kind of afterlife.
Feel free to debate the ending in comments, and tell me what to read next!
